Localized theory of adsorbate-induced surface stress: Application to the LiÕMo„110... system

چکیده
We present an experimental and theoretical study of surface stress in the Li/Mo~110! system, which exhibits anisotropic behavior and nonlinear coverage dependence. At low coverages the induced stress is tensile and larger in the @1̄10# direction than in @001#. With increasing coverage ~u.0.25! both stress components switch over and become compressive. With the aid of electronic structure calculations we conclude that the anisotropy is due to the atomic arrangement characteristic of the bcc ~110! surface and that the nonlinear coverage dependence is due to the combined effect of adsorbate-substrate interactions and nonlinear screening in the surface.

Calculation of the Induced Charge Distribution on the Surface of a Metallic Nanoparticle Due to an Oscillating Dipole Using Discrete Dipole Approximation method
In this paper, the interaction between an oscillating dipole moment and a Silver nanoparticle has been studied. Our calculations are based on Mie scattering theory and discrete dipole approximation(DDA) method. At first, the resonance frequency due to excitingthe localized surface plasmons has been obtained using Mie scattering theory and then by exciting a dipole moment in theclose proximity of...
متن کاملlectron – phonon coupling in W ( 110 ) - ( 1 3 1 ) H
Recently, we reported high resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements that indicated unusually strong coupling between adsorbate vibrations and a surface-localized electron state in the system W(110)-(131)H. We have now extended these measurements to probe the electron–phonon coupling strength as a function of position on the relevant Fermi contour. We find that the strength of the co...
متن کاملCantilever measurements of surface stress, surface reconstruction, film stress and magnetoelastic stress of monolayers
We review the application of cantilever-based stress measurements in surface science and magnetism. The application of thin (thickness appr. 0.1 mm) single crystalline substrates as cantilevers has been used successfully to measure adsorbate-induced surface stress changes, lattice misfit induced film stress, and magneto-elastic stress of ferromagnetic monolayers. Surface stress changes as small...
متن کاملThe surface chemistry of metal-oxygen interactions: a first-principles study of O:Rh(110)
We report on a computational study of the clean and oxygen-covered Rh(110) surface, based on density-functional theory within the local-density approximation. We have used plane-wave basis sets and Vanderbilt ultra-soft pseudopotentials. For the clean surface, we present results for the equilibrium structure, surface energy, and surface stress of the unreconstructed and (1×2) reconstructed stru...
متن کاملExponential Attractor for an Adsorbate-induced Phase Transition Model
This paper is concerned with the adsorbate-induced phase transition model on a catalytic surface introduced by Hildebrand et al [2] and Mikhailov et al [3, 7]. They showed that microreactors with submicroreactor and nanometer sizes may spontaneously develop in surface chemical reactions by a non-equilibrium selforganization process. The self-organized micrometers represent localized structure r...
